Sky Lanterns
Sky lanterns have become increasingly popular in the United States. They are often preferred over fireworks for certain festivals, events and parties. The standard sky lantern has been around for centuries, and today’s lanterns can come in a variety of shapes and colors. People from all over the world have released them into the night sky in celebration of national holidays, weddings, concerts and public gatherings. These paper lanterns utilize a small fuel packet that is wired to the rim. When lit, the packet fills the lantern with warm air, which makes it rise like a hot air balloon. Eventually the fuel packet burns out and cools as the biodegradable lantern slowly floats to the ground. Sky lanterns should never be used near airports or power lines, or when there is any significant wind.
